about the project

In memory of Studio 400's infatuation with catalyzing resin, we created a farewell gift to our thesis professor, Karen Lange. Conceptual inspiration came from our previous furniture designs and the idea of an armored shoe with the ability to flex. The upper is made of elastic strips coated with both polyester and epoxy resin creating a scale-like appearance. Metal tape was placed beneath each “scale” to avoid resin penetration; because of this, the front of the shoe is able to flex and breathe through the non-resined pocket. The heel plate was hammered against an anvil to attain a cupped shape, while the strap lock was taken from a rollerskate.
